Twitter Isn’t “Over”, I’m Over It.

jhnmyr:

Last week in Los Angeles I participated in a live Q&A as part of an ASCAP expo on songwriting. When the topic of Twitter came up, I explained my waning interest in it being part of my daily life. By no means do I think it’s over as a medium altogether, but I do think that the days of “Twitter: The Breakthrough” have passed, as has been and will continue to be the case for every online social network. It’s reached it’s cruising altitude, so to speak. Patterns and templates are emerging. The Twitter-bred syntax isn’t really doing it for me anymore.

And call me crazy, but I don’t think it’s the healthiest thing in the world to read scads of mentions/@replies and effectively open the floodgate of other people’s approval/disapproval. Finding out in 140 characters what a stranger has to say about you is like a mathematical equation without an established value of ‘x’. Who are you, stranger? What do you stand for? What do you like, and if it’s not me, then what does move you? What DO you look up to? Once I find that out, I’ll know how disappointed I should be.

This is where Tumblr comes in. It’s the future of social networking if your image of the future features intelligent discourse. I love reading other Tumblr users replies, because they’re thoughtful by virtue of the fact that if they’re not, they’ll bring the intellectual property value of their own blog down, and that’s a commodity on Tumblr.

This post is an experiment in itself. If you want to communicate with me, open a Tumblr account, follow me, repost my blog and then add to it. I’ll follow you back. Agree or disagree, lionize or demonize, but for God’s sake, be original. You’ll have all the room in the world to do it now.

JM

The man’s got a point. On the note of unhealthiness… I think the internet in itself is pretty unhealthy. I don’t understand people’s addiction to it, especially social networking like Facebook. I mean, don’t get me wrong; I spend a lot of time on it because I enjoy the wonders of the web. In fact I probably only use it 60% of the time as a procrastination tool, but I could easily spend a fortnight absent from it without getting withdrawal symptoms.

Street Art of the Day: Jason Shelowitz is presently in the process of posting 400 “Service Changes”-themed Subway Etiquette posters on behalf of the “Metropolitan Etiquette Authority” on trains throughout the city. He encourages subway patrons to keep an eye out for them and take them “before the MTA does.”
[animalny.]

This reminds me of the guy on the bus today. And the many more before him. He was pretty overweight which wouldn’t have been a problem if he hadn’t of chosen to sit next to me, or more so, ON ME. I was literally squished into half a seat. Seriously, every time I’d shuffle towards the window a little to give myself some personal space from him, he’d shuffle closer. I’m thinking, “For goodness sake - there are two seats here! One for me and one for you!” He also kept panting heavily and had really bad breath. And then when there were empty seats he didn’t even bother moving across to them! Funnest hour of my day.

WikiLeaks - Collateral Murder

“5th April 2010 10:44 EST WikiLeaks has released a classified US military video depicting the indiscriminate slaying of over a dozen people in the Iraqi suburb of New Baghdad — including two Reuters news staff.
Reuters has been trying to obtain the video through the Freedom of Information Act, without success since the time of the attack. The video, shot from an Apache helicopter gun-site, clearly shows the unprovoked slaying of a wounded Reuters employee and his rescuers. Two young children involved in the rescue were also seriously wounded.”

I can’t believe they’re praising each other for “good shoot’n.” You just killed a guy because you assumed they were armed… and the fact that they were injured beyond belief isn’t good enough for you?! Oh yeah, keep fucking shooting. I don’t know exactly what’s going on here but I can’t believe they’re regarding what they just did as “nice”… that’s disgusting. This video is so shocking.
